Microsoft plans to ship one million units of its new operating system, Windows XP, before Christmas from its distribution base in Sandyford, Dublin.

Irish retailers reported public interest yesterday in the new product, although sales had not been particularly brisk up to mid-afternoon. Mr Colm Rowsone, who works with Compustore, said they had sold about five or six XP box products by about 3 p.m.

Windows XP Home Edition will be available in an upgrade version here for £99 (€126) and in a standard version for £197. Windows XP Professional will be available in an upgrade version for £193 and in a standard version for £287.
