THE chairman of the Competition Authority, Mr Paddy Lyons, is expected to meet the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Mr Bruton, today or tomorrow to explain a series of criticisms he made about new laws aimed at tightening up the area of competition. Mr Lyons said last week that aspects of the Competition Amendment Bill were "unworkable" and maintained that the bill, if enacted, could actually weaken competition law.
Mr Bruton said at the weekend that Mr Lyons's comments were "ill informed and unhelpful". However, Mr Bruton will not be seeking Mr Lyons's resignation as chairman. His term of office ends in three months.
