Wall Street turned in a mixed performance yesterday with a handful of large, well-known issues advancing but most other stocks declining as investors took profits following last week's rally. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 85.63, or 0.8%, at 11,089.52. The Standard and Poor's 500 index fell 1.06 to 1,420.94, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 23.28 to 3,392.53.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 2-to-1 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 932 up, 2,199 down and 444 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 957.04 million shares, against 1.09 billion in the previous session.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 0.78 to 460.49.
