Technology group Multis has opened a new €9 million manufacturing centre which will create as many as 50 new jobs in Galway over the next three years.

The purpose-built 64,000 sq ft facility, which was opened yesterday by Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment Micheál Martin, will enable Multis to expand its business globally. The group, which currently employs 75 people at its headquarters in Galway and a further 35 at a satellite facility in the Netherlands, specialises in the remanufacture of high-end computer equipment for use in the second-hand market.

Its clients include large multinationals such as Hewlett Packard and Sun Microsystems.

The new jobs will be in areas such as engineering and customer service.

Multis chief executive Sean Keenan welcomed the expansion and said the company was looking forward to the next phase in its development. "Our new facility will be instrumental in helping us achieve our future plans to expand globally and target major corporations in sectors such as the telecommunications and medical equipment industries," he said.

Multis, which was founded in 1994, aims to double its turnover in the next three years.

In addition, the group is working with Enterprise Ireland to set up a joint venture in Asia and to significantly expand its activities in the US.

In another positive move for the area, Mr Martin opened a new business incubation centre at the Galway campus of the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. Through Enterprise Ireland, the Government has invested €2.5 million in the centre, which is aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and aiding the commercial development of scientific research.
