Career: Joined Intel in 1974 as a technology development manager. Became a vice-president in 1984, a senior vice-president in 1987 and executive vice-president in 1990. Elected to Intel's board of directors in 1992 and was named the company's chief operating officer in 1993. Became Intel's fourth president in May 1997, and chief executive in 1998.
Why he is in the news: Because Intel is a cornerstone company of the global technology industry, Barrett is always under scrutiny. Intel has recently issued profit warnings, although it expects a recovery in the second half of the year. He is visiting Intel's Leixlip chip plant this week.
