He began his career as a financial manager at Beachams in Britain and later moved to Cement Roadstone in Ireland. He joined the Agricultural Credit Corporation as financial controller in 1973 and became chief executive in 1988.

ACCBank has announced pretax profits of £20.5 million this week, its final financial results as a State-owned bank. The bank is due to merge with TSB Bank and float on the Irish stock market in May 2000.
