Causeway Data Communications, a University of Ulster spin-out company, has signed a deal with US firm Patriot Properties to market and distribute its property valuation computer software in North America.

The deal was signed as the University of Ulster opened an office in Boston to promote its spin-out companies and to provide a base where US firms can learn more about the technologies and expertise in Northern Ireland.

Causeway's software, Spatialest, is one of the first to include location as a key part of the property modelling process using novel geographic information systems technology.

The company was founded by four lecturers from the college in 1997 and is mainly self-funded, although it did recently receive some backing from State body Invest Northern Ireland.
