National Irish Bank (NIB) has said reports it is challenging an investigation by the Comptroller and Auditor General, Mr John Purcell, into the payment of DIRT by financial institutions are "incorrect".

The bank said it was co-operating fully with Mr Purcell and had "no intention of challenging his appointment".

Mr Purcell was appointed by the Dail Select Committee of Public Accounts to examine the issue of DIRT payments after allegations that AIB had paid £14 million (€17.8 million) in DIRT liabilities in 1991 to the Revenue when its liability was closer to £100 million.

NIB said it had applied to the High Court to have matters related to DIRT tax dealt with by Mr Purcell only, "rather than by the High Court inspectors", who are currently investigating several possible breaches of company law at the bank.

The bank has also requested the High Court to supply it with all background information which was used by the inspectors to compile their interim report.
