O’Brien denies involvement in bid for Doncaster Rovers

Denis O’Brien has denied he has any interest in investing in British football club, Doncaster Rovers.

This follows reports linking the businessman to an unknown Irish consortium which is said to be considering a possible takeover bid for the club.

Doncaster, which won promotion to the Championship last season, is searching for new investors to pump £20 million into the club’s ailing finances.

In a statement today, Mr O’Brien said: “Totally inaccurate claims have been made thereby creating an utterly false and misleading impression.”

The telecoms magnate said he had not spoken to anyone about buying the club and said he had “no interest whatsoever” in investing in the club.

Mr O’Brien was part of a consortium which bought Doncaster’s old Belle Vue stadium in 1998.

The £4.3 million deal, which was later investigated by the Moriarty Tribunal, was part of a plan to move Doncaster Rovers football team to a new ground and redevelop the old stadium.

The team has since moved and the former stadium has been demolished.

Mr O’Brien is reportedly planning to sell his remaining interest in the stadium to a English firm if planning permission to redevelop the stadium is granted.
