Phillips Petroleum, the British oil exploration company, has begun a work programme on its licences in the Rockall Trough which are spread over 5,328 sq km.

Philips has become the third largest holder of exploration net acreage in Ireland after being awarded the licences recently by the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources.

The company has established an office in Dublin to co-ordinate its operations.
