Next day delivery rates at An Post have improved in the first quarter of the year but remain well below targets set by the regulator, ComReg.

A report by ComReg, released yesterday, found that 76 per cent of single-piece mail was delivered the next working day after posting. This covered the period between January and March 2005 and was up from 70 per cent in the same period of 2004.

However, ComReg, which regulates An Post, said its target was 94 per cent for next day delivery.

"The 6 per cent improvement in performance over the same period last year is to be welcomed and ComReg will continue to monitor quality of service results for the remaining quarters of 2005," ComReg stated.

The regulator also found that 98 per cent of single piece priority mail is delivered by the third working day after it was posted. The regulator said it also wanted to see an improvement in this area.

The report also drew attention to mail delivery problems in Dublin. It found that only 97 per cent of mail posted was reaching its destination after three days. "This would again seem to point to particular problems in the Dublin area where so much of the nation's mail originates".

"The national economy needs an efficient and reliable postal service. ComReg remains committed to continuing to actively pursue the issue of quality improvements with An Post and will continue to publish reports of performance every quarter as well as publish an annual report."
