Stocks finished Election Day 2000 essentially unchanged as investors were transfixed by one of the tightest presidential races in decades. The market traded in a tight range and volume was light.

"No one wants to do anything until they find out who wins tomorrow," said Mr John Forelli, portfolio manager at Independence Investment Associates.

"We're going to see who's in the White House and Congress and who runs the country for the next four years, so it's important," said Mr Guy Truicko, portfolio manager at Unity Management in Garden City, New York.

Cisco System's disappointing results announced on Monday continued to cast gloom over the market.
