It is a technology that enables the high-speed transfer of data and voice over radiowaves. It provides customers with an alternative method of accessing broadband technology, which offers "always on" high-speed Internet, multimedia and other data services.
Who is likely to use this technology?
Large corporations and small and medium-sized businesses are all likely to use broadband fixed wireless technology. It is likely to be particularly useful in areas that do not have extensive existing cable and telecoms networks.
Why is it in the news?
The UK Radio communications agency is holding a licence auction for radio spectrum to enable companies to build fixed wireless networks and offer these services. Three Irish-based companies - Eircom, Chorus and Formus - are participating in the auction.
