The Dow Jones index of 30 blue chips rose 13.13 points (0.14 per cent) yesterday to close at 9,314.28 points after profit-taking kept share prices down for most of the day.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed up 19.33 points to 1,985.21 points, about one per cent higher than Tuesday's closing price. The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 3.88 points to 1,186.86.
Trading was relatively calm with just 585.5 million shares changing hands.
The market will be closed for today's Thanksgiving Day holiday, and the trading day will be abbreviated on tomorrow.
Investors also seemed interested in long-term obligations, with the Treasury Department's benchmark 30-year bonds closed at 5.178 per cent down from 5.221 per cent late on Tuesday.
