The voluntary redundancy programme introduced last month by Intel in the Republic has been heavily over-subscribed, the chip manufacturer has confirmed.

Strong demand will enable the Leixlip-based firm to increase the number of redundancies above the original 170 figure, if necessary.

The company was offering workers a competitive severance package which included between four to 12 months pay and travel and education vouchers.

A spokesman confirmed yesterday the company had met its target and had refused some applicants.

He would not comment on speculation that Intel had already offered more than 170 people redundancy to cut costs further. He said it would announce the exact job count tally in October when it reported results.
