Stocks plunged yesterday, with the Dow Jones industrial average tumbling more than 193 points, after the government's report of a steep rise in consumer prices renewed inflation worries and sent bond prices sharply lower.

At the close close on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 193.87 points at 10,913.32. Broader stock indicators were sharply lower as well.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index fell 29.76 to 1,337.80, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 54.13 to 2,527.87.

NYSE volume totalled 723.69 million shares at the close against 785.34 million in the previous session.
