Musgrave, the owner of SuperValu and Centra, has appointed one of Ireland's most senior corporate figures as its next chairman.

Nicky Hartery, a former Dell executive, will take over as chairman of the retailing group, which has its headquarters in Cork, when the incumbent, Peter Lacy, retires at the end of the year.

Mr Lacy has served on the board for more than a decade, including three years as chairman, and was previously a partner in the accounting and professional services firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Mr Hartery is currently also the chairman of CRH, one of Ireland's largest listed companies with a market capitalisation of €25 billion. He has been a nonexecutive director of Musgrave since 2010.
