The Revenue Commissioners have revealed that there were almost 20,000 individuals or companies who were statutorily excluded from being published in last week's list of settlement cases. Their payments together far outweigh those of the high profile list of the published 227 defaulters. According to a spokesman, there were 19,225 tax defaulters whose settlements were under £10,000 or who provided complete information on undisclosed tax liabilities, for the year ending December 1995. The amount of revenue raised, including penalties and interest, in this list was £120 million, an average settlement of £6,242. Last week's published list of 227 defaulters produced a total settlement of £10,087,947, an average of £44,440. The total amount of such settlements, including the published 227 defaulters, was over £130 million, compared to settlement payments totalling £138 million for the same period in 1995. Of this £129 million came from 22,596 defaulters whose names were not published.
