Stock indexes shot to record highs yesterday as oil stocks rose with oil prices, but concerns about earnings at technology companies limited the advances in Nasdaq trading.
On Wall street, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 79.08 points - or by 0.8 per cent - at 9,772.84, surpassing its previous record close of 9,736.08, set last Friday. The Dow is now up 6.4 per cent for the year.
The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 7.00 to 1,286.84, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index climbed 13.18 to 2,406.12.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 5-to-4 margin on the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE composite index rose 3.55 to 606.48, and the American Stock Exchange composite index rose 3.69 to 715.14. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies added 1.92 to 401.12.
