Sage Ireland, which develops business software, has acquired smaller rival Service Software Accounting Package (SSAP), in its second deal in just over a month

The acquisition price was not released by Sage but it is understood the company paid SSAP's shareholders up to €1 million.

The acquisition by the Irish arm of the FTSE 100-listed Sage Group is the latest in a series of deals that have boosted its revenues to €20 million per year.

SSAP's core software product, TaxPro, allows taxation practices to submit returns electronically and instantly receive clients' assessments online. Firms that use the product include PricewaterhouseCoopers Ireland, KPMG Ireland and Ernst & Young.

SSAP was founded in 2000 by Mr Noel O'Regan and quickly established the TaxPro brand in the Republic. Its most recent results show the company had €80,000 in the bank and debtors owing €200,000 in February 2003.

Mr Liam Mullaney, managing director of Sage Ireland, said the acquisition added complementary products to Sage's portfolio.

"The strategic fit with our existing business is strong," he added.

Sage Ireland, which was established in 1999, supplies a range of accountancy, payroll and customer relationship management software products. Since setting up in the Republic, the firm has made a number of bolt-on acquisitions to increase its product portfolio and customer base.

Sage Group is due to release financial results later this week.
