Sainsbury's yesterday proved its dedication to becoming a major US player with a £295 million deal to buy the fifth-largest supermarkets chain in New England. The company, which has pledged to have annual US sales of £6 billion within seven years, is buying loss-making supermarket group, Star Markets, which operates 53 stores mainly in the Boston area.
