THE board of Bord na Mona is to meet next Thursday to consider the second report from accountants Price Waterhouse on the remuneration of chief executive, Dr Eddie O'Connor. Sources say the accountants have undertaken a detailed review of Dr O'Connor's package during his nine years at the company.

They say the report has not yet been given to the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications or to the Bord na Mona chairman, Mr Pat Dineen, and his board colleagues. It has also been requested by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Commercial StateSponsored Bodies.

The first Price Waterhouse report into Dr O'Connor's remuneration found that he received £141,000 in expenses in the three years to last March, of which £39,000 was paid without receipts having to be produced. The second report will cover Dr O'Connor's full nine year term of office.

Meanwhile, Government inquiries into the remuneration packages of other semi state chief executives, ordered in the wake of the reports of Dr O'Connor's earnings, are continuing. The Department of Finance is understood to be awaiting the full details it has requested from all state companies and agencies.

The Department of Transport Energy and Communications has sought further clarification of the level of expenses and other non pay elements of the packages of the chief executives of the state companies under its direct control.

The move follows the receipt of assurances from the chairmen of eight state companies that the basic salaries of their chief executives are within Government guidelines.

It is understood that the department is seeking further information on expenses and non pay elements of chief executive packages supplied by some state companies. As a result, it has decided to seek further information from them all.

The department declined to name the state companies from which it is seeking further information.
