Declines led advances by 1,188 to 1,139 on the New York Stock Exchange, leaving 781 unchanged.
Big Board volume totalled 428.31 million shares, against 435.28 million on Tuesday.
The NYSE's composite index fell 1.27 to 349.48.
The Standard and Poor's 500 stock index fell 3.79 to 652.00.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 3.82 to 1,092.99.
At the American Stock Exchange, the market value index rose 0.69 to 569.84.
