Blue-chip stocks bounced back towards the 11,000 mark yesterday after the latest round of economic reports signalled that US economic growth is continuing at a slower, more sustainable pace.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 120.58 to 10,998.39.
The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 8.65 to 1,397.72, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 17.55 to 3,353.71.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a seven-to-five margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,708 down, 1,407 up and 427 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 881.52 million shares at the close compared to 966.56 million in the previous session.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 0.41 to 453.67.
