Investment by Strencom
Data network provider Strencom is to invest €500,000 in its infrastructure so that it can provide a cloud computing service
As a result it will be able to offer private clouds accessed over wide area networks, which will address the cost and security concerns of Irish businesses around using cloud services on the public internet.
“We expect our cloud connect service to represent 30 per cent of our business by 2013,” said Tim Murphy, founder and managing director of Strencom.
Strencom has already invested €250,000 in its cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model.
Firms not backing up key data
Two new pieces of research show that Irish firms are not backing up their key data.
A survey of 90 Irish businesses by online back-up service Mozy found that 23 per cent of Irish respondents do not back up files at all compared to 14.3 per cent in London.
In total, almost two-thirds of small businesses in Ireland and Britain fail to systematically back up their PCs.
Research by IT Force and keepITsafe, found that two Irish organisations in five admitted to a significant data loss incident.
Despite this, older, less- reliable tape technology is used for back-up by 65 per cent of respondents, with just 7 per cent using online data back-up.
