Technology stocks recover

A RISE in bonds moved the Wall Street stock market higher.

Technology stocks, which had fallen further on Monday after last week's bruising sell-off, galloped higher in the afternoon, pulling the struggling Nasdaq index higher for the day.

Intel, the world's biggest manufacturer of semiconductors, rose on the Nasdaq after see-sawing in advance of its earnings report. Sun Microsystems was higher too.

IBM, which releases earnings tomorrow, rose sharply on the NYSE. Other struggling technology issues that jumped near the end of Big Board trading included Micron Technology, Motorola, Micro Technology and Compaq Computer.

Bank stocks moved higher as several giants reported strong earnings. Chemical and Chase Manhattan, poised to merge into the nation's largest bank, both reported improved earnings for 1995's final quarter. Citicorp, the largest US bank, reported lower profits, but only because of lower taxes a year ago.
