Google has bought technology patents from Foxconn, the maker of its futuristic Glass eyeware, in an apparent attempt to consolidate its head start in wearable gadgets.
The deal is a rare example of a US technology company buying intellectual property from an Asian manufacturer.
Financial details were not disclosed, but the deal could be the first of many by Foxconn, which has begun working with a patent portfolio consultancy to consider new ways to utilise its intellectual property.
The patents were related to head-mounted displays, through which virtual images could be superimposed on a real-world view, Foxconn said.
Foxconn, the Taiwanese company also known as Hon Hai Precision, has set up a unit in California to assemble Google Glass eyeware. It is also a big supplier of other consumer electronic brands, including Apple.
While Apple has not announced plans for wearable technology products, others have. Samsung is expected to unveil its Galaxy Gear smart watch early next month, with sources suggesting Apple's competing iWatch will follow next year. – Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2013
