DELL’S MANUFACTURING plant in Limerick made a profit of $9.2 million (€6.6 million) for the 12-month period to January 30th, 2010, according to recently filed accounts.
This compares to a $50.5 million loss made by Dell Products Manufacturing Ltd in 2008, primarily due to an exceptional cost of $76 million related to the winding down of its operations.
Dell Products, which operated the Limerick plant, ceased manufacturing operations in Limerick on December 15th, 2009, as announced on January 8th that year.
The company said in the accounts that turnover decreased by 47 per cent from $231 million in 2008 to $123 million in 2009 “due to a fall in volumes manufactured at the Limerick facility”.
The company’s operating profit up to January 30th, 2010, was $9.1 million compared to $17 million the previous financial year.
Its bill for wages was more than halved to $57 million from $143 million, following the lay-off of 1,900 employees in January 2009.
The average number of people employed by Dell Products for the financial year ending January 30th, 2010, was 998 compared to 2,486 the previous year.
According to Dell, a $76 million charge was incurred in respect of the costs of severance, accelerated depreciation, loss on disposal of fixed assets and impairment of land and buildings prior to the fiscal year 2009.
