AIRSPEED TELECOM is expanding its live broadcasting service LiveLinx across Europe. The expansion is being facilitated by a new Ka Band satellite capability from UK-based Avanti Communications. It will allow broadcast quality signals to be delivered more cheaply than before.
AirSpeed MD Liam O’Kelly described the development as a “game changer” for satellite news gathering. “Now, for the first time, we have small terminals capable of delivering excellent broadcast quality signals at a much lower cost than was possible with Ku band,” he said.
Ka frequencies are higher than that used by the Ku band.
The LiveLinx service, which is run by AirSpeed Telecom and TV post-production company Digital Space, allows organisations to deliver live broadcast events without the need for engineers and satellite time, allowing TV firms to cut back on costs.
It can also be expanded to include internet and virtual private network access, and telephony services while at remote locations. The latest expansion will allow broadcasters to use a mobile vehicle that is fitted with a LiveLinx MPEG4 uplink.
Since its 2010 launch, LiveLinx has been used by Irish broadcasters TV3 and RTÉ. The service has also been used to establish a link between stockbrokers NCB Stockbrokers, Davy and Merrion Stockbrokers and RTÉ’s financial newsdesk.
