Can your smartphone last a full day without charging? Chances are you have to charge it at least every day.

While the problem of battery life has not yet been solved by mobile phone companies, Japanese device maker Kyocera may have an alternative solution.

The company has unveiled a prototype smartphone at Mobile World Congress which features a transparent solar panel below the screen.

The solar layer is less than 0.5mm thick, so is thin enough to be incorporated into existing phones.

When the phone is exposed to light, whether the product is switched on or off, it collects energy. Just 10 minutes of sunlight will give the phone 100 minutes of standby time, it is reported.

The solar technology for the phone comes from a French company called SunPartner, which says it won’t impact upon the devices’ touchscreen capabilities.
