Irish Netflix users have been warned to be on their guard after a phishing scam targeting users of the video streaming service was discovered.

According to ITsecurity firm Smarttech.ie, the fake message asks users to click on a link to update their credit card details, or face cancellation of their Netflix account.

"Phishing scams like the Netflix one, pray on peoples tendency to trust the authenticity of message and the company logo. Once the criminals carrying out the scam have collected enough information from the unsuspecting victims, they can use it for credit card fraud or identity theft," explained chief executive of Smarttech.ie Ronan Murphy.

“As a general rule, one should always be wary of any unsolicited emails or messages looking for your personal information or credit card details, no matter how genuine they look.”

The popular video streaming service has an estimated 175,000 users in Ireland.

Mr Murphy advised any users who had received the fake email to ignore it, or not to enter any financial details if they had followed the link in the email. Users with concerns about their accounts should contact Netflix directly - not through the contact details provided in the email - to discuss their account.
