“Infobesity” is a strange and obnoxious expression used to describe the current media climate. Indeed, the excess of news, gossip and sloth videos has been well documented. It’s little wonder, so, that apps like News Republic continue to sprout up. Create a list of subjects that matter to you, and the app creates menus and newsfeeds that it thinks you would like. The more you use News Republic, it boasts, the smarter the recommendations become. So if you have a yen for, say, hip hop and you generally like one newspaper in particular, those will be the most prominent stories. It sources from hundreds of outlets, many of which, interestingly, are from the old guard; traditional newspapers, news channels and magazines. News Republic is not immune to obnoxious expressions of its own, referring to “tag nav” as a way to tag and browse the site. But it’s so nifty and attractive, we can forgive some silly expressions. This is an updated version of the app, with an improved layout.
