John’s Phone, from €69.95

If you think mobile phones have become a little too high tech, then John’s Phone could be for you. Forget about the iPhone and Android and all their apps. If you don’t need a phone that will control your TV, set your digital box and let you track down the kids, John’s Phone is a refreshing change. Describing itself as the world’s simplest mobile phone, it allows you to make and receive calls, and that’s it. It won’t even receive text messages, while the contacts book is pen and paper stored in a small compartment in the phone. It has a six-hour talk time and a standby time of three weeks. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

Samsung SF310, €960

Samsung’s SF310 is a stylish notebook that doesn’t scrimp on the important things. A sleek white exterior is paired with an Intel Core i5 chip and 4GBytes of RAM. A 320 GByte hard drive gives you enough space for plenty of documents and photographs.

Two USB ports and a HDMI port are behind a cover; the device also builds in a third USB port and an SD card slot for quick access to your media.

Equally important, the keyboard is well spaced, responsive and easy to use without multiple typos.

The touchpad is a little more difficult to get to grips with, but a few tweaks with the settings make it much easier to handle.
