Entrants in a spin at web awards
THE EIRCOM Spiders are coming around again, but it’s too late to brush up on your virals, blogging and tweeting, because the ceremony takes place this Thursday at the in Dublin.
This year’s awards received the highest number of entries since the competition was established in 1996.
More than 700 people are expected to attend the ceremony, which will be hosted by comedian Des Bishop in the Convention Centre.
Sticking with the theme of online achievements, the Realex Payments Irish Web Awards are also taking place this Thursday.
Founded by Damien Mulley of Mulley Communication – founder of the Irish Blog Awards and Social Media Awards – the categories range from news and entertainment sites to social media campaigns and e-commerce websites.
The Irish Times is shortlisted in the best online publication category. Previous winners of Irish Web Awards include The Irish Times, RTE.ie, Silicon Republic, IDA Ireland and Boards.ie.
Phone wars break out as Google to unveil Nexus 4
GOOGLE IS expected to unveil the latest version of its Android operating system, a new Nexus phone, and a new 10-inch Nexus 10 tablet, at an event scheduled in New York today.
Details of Google’s new flagship Nexus 4 smartphone were leaked last week by retailer Carphone Warehouse, which posted pictures and full specifications of the phone on its website.
It said the Nexus 4 will have a 4.7-inch screen with density of 320 pixels per inch, just shy of the iPhone 5’s 326. The device is expected to form the centrepiece of today’s Google event.
Google, along with Microsoft, Apple and Amazon, is already preparing to do battle in the run-up to the busy Christmas period following flaccid quarterly numbers.
The rivalry was evident last week with Apple’s chief executive officer Tim Cook comparing Microsoft’s Surface tablet to an over-engineered car that can fly and float.
Microsoft hit back saying its Surface boasted twice as much storage as the iPad.
Let the battle begin.
Two decades of open borders
IT HAS been 20 years since the formation of the EU Single Market – giving us the right to work, travel and move goods and money freely around the biggest single market in the world.
And the opening of markets without borders is one of the European Union’s greatest achievements to this day.
To coincide with the anniversary, the European Commission and the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation is hosting a conference, “Twenty years of the Single Market – Europe working for Irish SMEs”, in Dublin this Thursday.
The event is targeted at small firms and will include hands-on workshops on how to make the most of the Single Market.
Themes will include accessing the Single Market, access to finance, entrepreneurship and the Digital Single Market.
Jerry Kennelly, CEO and founder of Tweak Limited, and Emer Daly, DG Internal Market, EU Commission, are among the guest speakers.
