Twitter to add 100 jobs in Dublin office

Twitter is to expand its Dublin office, increasing staff numbers to around 200 by the end of next year.

The company, which set up in Ireland in 2011, currently employs around 100 people at its office on Pearse Street.

The roles are across a number of business functions, including sales, marketing, engineering, finance and HR.

The expansion is a vote of confidence in its Irish team, managing director of twitter in Ireland Stephen McIntyre said.

“At the start of last year we were only a handful of people. It’s been really rapid growth to date and we want that to continue,” he said. “We’ve scaled rapidly and so it’s an investment for the future and it’s a vote of confidence for both the Dublin side and the European business.”

Twitter is already recruiting for 30 roles.

Dublin is home to Twitter's European headquarters, and has expanded from a small team at a serviced office in Dublin's city centre to its current location, the former offices of US games company Popcap, which closed down a year ago.

The new offices will also give Twitter the scope to which will allow the team to grow over the coming months.

“We have more flexibility here. This is the third office we’ve been in in Dublin. The first two were more temporary offices. This is a longer term home,” Mr McIntyre said.

“It feels good to have started building a big and successful operation here. I thnk for all of us who joined here at the start and even right now, we joined because we wanted to build something. It’s nice to see that coming to fruition, but we still have a long way to go yet. It’s still early days in the history of twitter not just globally but also in Europe. I think we’ll look back in a few years time and still consider this one of the early phases.”

The social network has surged in popularity since its launch in 2006, with more than 200 million active users and 500 million tweets sent every day.

Established in San Francisco, the majority of Twitter's usage is now outside the US, with 70 per cent coming from overseas. The company also has a large mobile user base, with 60 per cent of users accessing the platform through a mobile device.

Twitter will later today hold an event at its Pearse Street offices to mark their opening, with rugby player Jamie Heaslip and producer Maia Dunphy among those who will be attending to share their Twitter experiences.

The company has filed documents with regulators in the US ahead of a planned IPO.
