YouTube app:The bad news is that the next update to the iPhone operating system – iOS 6 – will get rid of the familiar YouTube app, something that has been baked into the iPhone since the beginning.

The good news is that YouTube has already developed a replacement app that boasts several improvements. Downloadable from the App Store, the new YouTube app can play more music videos supported by advertising that was not allowed under Apple’s T&Cs. There are more new features to come, along with an iPad version in the works.

Any.DO

Technology is supposed to make us more productive, right? And it's also meant to make life less complicated! The Any.doChrome browser extension fits the bill. It's a clean and simple add-on that sits at the top of the screen. It allows you to add items by day and category, and also set reminders. The best bit is that it syncs with a free Any.doapp that's available on Android and iOS. Get your shopping done, put out the bins and all those other tasks that need reminding to do. Oh, and it syncs with Google Tasks.

Where was this web service all of my life? It links your Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, and SkyDrive cloud storage accounts to Gmail and creates a searchable index of all your attachments. It’s a beefed-up attachments search that finds docs, images and so on by keyword and enables you to add files directly to your cloud drive and easily share it with others. It works with a Firefox and Chrome extension but isn’t available yet for Safari. Word of advice: make a cup of tea while it indexes your inbox because it takes a while.

Facebook Cleaner

The last few iterations of Apple’s Safari browser have shown considerable improvement. There are plenty of great extensions, my favourite of which has to be Facebook Cleaner. This handy little piece of code runs in the background as you visit Facebook, and hey presto! – all of those annoying and ugly ads are gone. It almost makes the social networking site bearable, if you ignore the fact that non-ad content is largely a collection of self-indulgent status updates.
