This week’s Web Log is for those heading off to the Laois countryside tomorrow to enjoy a chilled weekend of music, culture, food and other delightful distractions at Electric Picnic.
Stream songs
SoundCloud
One day to go and you’ve just realised that you don’t know half of the acts playing at EP! When your friends cite some obscure electronica duo, it’s time to slink off to SoundCloud and listen to a curated stream of songs from bands you can expect to hear. Search SoundCloud for Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaur’s remix of Katy Perry’s Firework and feel smug. SoundCloud is also available as an iPhone and Android app so you can blast some choons on the car journey.

Theres no official smartphone app for Electric Picnic 2012, which is a pity but there are a few things you can download and have on your handset as a substitute. Grab these PDFs for the main arena and campsite, theyll come in handy as the grounds are quite extensive and the camping areas sprawl far from the main site, so its easy to get lost. Also invaluable is the PDF timetable for the various acts ( iti.ms/NW080q). Download, print out and keep in your pocket.
Lighting up
Torch (for iPhone)
You’re in the tent, it’s dark and you need to dig out your sleeping bag and jammies. This is the moment you remember that you’ve forgotten a torch. Keep calm, download this app right now for your iPhone and you’ll survive! If you have an Android handset, the second link below is a good alternative.

Group Hug
Scenario 1: You lose your phone. Scenario 2: the battery dies. In both cases you’ve wandered off on your own, lost in a haze of festival fun. To preempt time lost trying to track down your friends, register your name and mobile number at Vodafone’s Group Hug. You can store the numbers of your EP pals, so you can go the Vodafone Tent, log in and send them a free group text letting them know where you are. You don’t need to be a Vodafone customer to avail of this service.
