Skyn is a wearable biosensor that monitors blood-alcohol content in real time. Designed by breathalyser company BACtrack, this prototype wearable works with a smartphone app and looks a bit like a FitBit or similar trackers worn on the wrist. As the body processes alcohol, ethanol escapes through the skin as a byproduct. However, it takes about 45 minutes for a beer or wine to surface on the skin so the sensor is always 45 minutes behind your current consumption. Although this delay is a downside, the ongoing data collection will also serve as a picture of alcohol consumption over time, making it ideal as a personal health wearable rather than a legally binding alternative to breathalysing. Currently, the Skyn is only in prototype form but the company plans to release its wearable biosensor for sale later in the year.
