THE LATEST Permanent TSB/ ESRI house price index is due for release today.

The index, which is for the first six months of 2008, is likely to show a further decline in residential property values as the housing market continues to stagnate. This will be welcome news for aspiring homeowners, but will do little to buoy the spirits of hard-pressed homeowners.

On Friday, the construction employment index for June will be published, and will no doubt reflect the rapid contraction in this troubled sector of the economy.
