INTERNATIONAL LAW firm Maples and Calder has poached one of Ireland's top corporate and equity market lawyers, Edward Miller, from rival Matheson Ormsby Prentice.

High-profile deals which Mr Miller has advised on include the $4.95 billion (€3.2 billion) merger of Riverdeep and Houghton Mifflin, the largest ever acquisition by an Irish company.

He also acted for Riverdeep, now renamed Education Media and Publishing Group (EMPG), on the $4 billion acquisition of the US-based Harcourt Education from Anglo-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier.

Maples and Calder has been growing rapidly since it entered the Irish market in January 2006 and it now employs over 100 staff. The largest law firm in the Cayman Islands, it established its Irish operations through a merger with Binchy's, a specialist in international law, corporate finance and information technology, which employed 40 staff.
