The Moriarty Tribunal is to make formal applications this week for discovery of documents from a number of financial institutions, as it pursues its investigations into payments to Mr Charles Haughey.

The tribunal is understood to be seeking documents from Guinness & Mahon and Irish Intercontinental Bank (IIB), the two banks in which the so-called Ansbacher deposits were held in Ireland, and from stockbrokers NCB.

Much of this work being undertaken by the tribunal involves going back to seek information that it previously held but which it must now seek again, following a Supreme Court decision in July.

The Supreme Court, following an appeal by Mr Haughey and some members of his family, quashed 36 orders of discovery which the tribunal had made and said that, in future, individuals affected by the orders must be given the opportunity to make representations to the courts about them.

The tribunal is seeking information from Guinness & Mahon and IIB about accounts held by Ansbacher (Cayman) and Hamilton Ross, two Cayman Island companies which held the accounts managed by Mr Haughey's late accountant, Mr Des Traynor. Information from NCB is also being sought, relating to links with these firms.
