RICHARD DUNWOODY celebrated his call up for Champion Hurdle favourite Alderbrook with a near 17 to 1 double at Fontwell yesterday, courtesy of Melnik and Nazarro - then came down to earth with a bang.
Melnik got Dunwoody off the mark in the National Spirit Challenge Trophy Handicap Hurdle, where the partnership led at the last to beat Flight Lieutenant by seven lengths.
The double was sealed when Nazzaro defied top weight to win the John Rogerson Memorial Challenge Trophy Chase after he galloped on bravely to beat Desperate by six lengths.
Dunwoody was chasing a treble on Smiling Chief in the novices' handicap chase, but Ron Hodges' gelding unseated his rider at the first fence but both horse and rider were unhurt.
