Apprenticeship numbers have reached their highest level in nearly 20 years with more than 18,400 registered apprentices at the end of June, according to FAS. The agency believes it is on course to reach 20,000 next year.
The last time the numbers were at these levels was in 1980 when 21,500 people registered for apprenticeships.
The training and employment authority found that the most popular apprenticeships were for electricians, carpenters and joiners, plumbers, bricklayers and motor mechanics, reflecting strong growth in industry in general and in construction in particular.
FAS also found that more than 46 per cent of those who began apprenticeships had passed their Leaving Certificate.
Between January and June this year, 3,160 new apprentices were registered, an increase of 28 per cent over the first half of 1998.
