A widely-expected rise in US interest rates - possibly of by as much as half a percentage point - will provide the focus for markets during the week. In particular, analysts and the rest of us will be looking to see the effect on the euro after last week's concerted effort to put the brakes on its slide.

Closer to home, First Active will be hoping the news that it is in merger talks with Anglo Irish Bank will deflect criticism of its performance when it holds its annual general meeting tomorrow.

Elsewhere, ACC releases figures and hopefully some clear indication of its future plans after the collapse of the TSB merger.
