INVESTORS richly rewarded strong US profit reports yesterday by driving major Wall Street stock indexes higher, but the broad market lagged; amid mounting concern about the American economy.

Gains in just a few shares boosted the Dow Jones 30 industrial average and the stocks were up 57.45 at 5,124.35 at the close of business.

Overall advances led declines by about seven to five on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,383 up, 989 down and 731 unchanged.

Big Board volume totalled 449.89 million shares, against 458.73 million on Wednesday.

The NYSE's composite index rose 0.86 to 326.15. The Standard and Poor's 500 stock index rose 1.88 to 608.25.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 9.04 to 1,007.34.

At the American Stock Exchange, the market value index fell 4.16 to 529.05.
