Stocks in New York showed sizable gains yesterday, extending Tuesday's late rebound, as bargain hunters continued to pick through the wreckage of another sell-off sparked by the turmoil in Asia.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 90.11 points - or 1.1% - to 8,552.96, wiping out most of the remaining damage from Tuesday's sudden tailspin.

The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 14.24 to 1,084.22, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 32.83 to 1,825.53.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a five-to-two margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 2,204 up, 867 down and 473 unchanged.
