Carlow Arts Festival, the first big cultural event of the Irish Summer returns this June. Carlow comes alive over five days with an eclectic mix of visual arts, theatre, dance, music, spectacle, literature, and more. The festival is presented in the grounds of Carlow College from Wednesday, June 7th to Sunday, June 11th.
Highlights include Irish premieres of three works by European artists that blur artform boundaries. From Belgium, Dag Taeldeman’s and Andrew Van Ostade’s electrifying BodyBodyBodyBody is a journey to the edge of trance, rooted in the folk traditions of the Italian tarantella. In MOS, Greece’s Ioanna Paraskevopoulou appropriates everything, from a pair of bellows to two halves of a coconut, to live-score cinematic scenes. Sorry, But I Feel Slightly Disidentified... is a provocative performance piece by Benjamin Kahn (France/Belgium) that explores themes of race and gender. For music lovers, The O’Hara’s Main Stage features some of Ireland’s most acclaimed stars including John Francis Flynn, Æ Mak, and Jafaris.
The Orchard in Carlow College hosts two events where human interaction is at the core, Without Sin, a contemporary confessional box for the modern sinner, and Poetry SOS, a bespoke one-to-one consultation with a poet. This year’s ARTWORKS visual arts exhibition Remembering the Future also launches as part of the festival in VISUAL on Thursday, June 8th.
The festival also has a packed programme of family-friendly events and is the perfect way to celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg, Ireland’s national day of creativity for children and young people, which coincides with the festival on Saturday, June 10th.
