More than 2,244 drivers were caught speeding on Irish roads in the past week with one motorist in Ardcroney, Co Tipperary, being detected driving 121km/h in a 50km/h zone.
Gardaí are conducting a dedicated road traffic enforcement operation over the Christmas period. It will continue until January 6th, 2025.
During the second week of the operation, which ended on Thursday, there were three fatalities on our roads and 13 serious collisions which resulted in a number of people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries. More than 1,940 checkpoints were carried out with 178 people arrested for driving under the influence.
Notable top speeds detected included 186km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M1 in Donabate, Co Dublin, and 184km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R731, Monamolin, in Rathnure, Co Wexford.

There were 504 vehicles seized for road traffic offences with 329 fixed charge notices issued for the offence of using a mobile phone while driving.
