Hurler Kyle Hayes to find out next month if suspended jail sentence will be activated

Limerick man (26) spared prison after violent disorder conviction but was later found guilty of dangerous driving

Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes will find out next month if he is going to prison over his conviction for violent disorder.

A two-year suspended sentence was imposed on the All-Ireland winner (26) last March after he was convicted of two counts of engaging in violent disorder at the Icon nightclub in Limerick City on October 28th, 2019.

The sentence was suspended on condition that Hayes not offend within a two-year period.

However, he was last September convicted of dangerous driving at Mallow District Court, which heard he had driven at 150km/h in a 100km/h zone at Lissavoura near Mallow on July 14th last.

He offered a plea to the lesser offence of careless driving, but Judge Colm Roberts did not accept it.

Hayes, of Ballyashea, Kildimo, on Monday appeared before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for the re-entry of his suspended sentence.

Brian McInerney SC, for Hayes, told the court the suspended sentence matter could not be heard as his client is appealing his dangerous driving conviction, which has to be heard first.

State solicitor Padraig Mawe told the court he had no difficulty with the matter being adjourned until after Mr Hayes’s appeal is finalised before Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Michael P Walsh remanded Hayes on continuing bail until March 19th.
