THE main problem with most of the songs written by so-called confessional song-writers is that they reek of self-indulgence and self-pity. Rarely does a singer/song writer come along who imbues his of her more introspective and intimate moments with anything approaching wit or intellectual and emotional integrity.the weekend was a perfect example of the head touching the heart and connecting in a way that was occasionally breathtaking. Saying at the start that she finds being “completely self- confessional repugnant”, Colvin went on to display a talent not only for mimickry (Alan Rickman a speciality) but also for laying love, and its many variations, very much on the line.
A little bit Joni Mitchell, a little bit Sheryl Crow, and a whole lot Shawn Colvin, it’s astounding that she has the credibility of one but not the crossover success of the other. Some might think it’s better that way perhaps, but it would be a shame to deny Shawn Colvin access to a far wider audience. She’s more deserving than most, that’s for sure.
